More demanding scholarly-processing services that require software, compute resources or full document-processing environments that are not practical inside a web browser.
Advanced tools require server-side processing because they use specialized software or computational environments that are not practical to run entirely in a browser.
File handling and retention conditions will be shown clearly before a server-processed task begins.
Tools are enabled only when their backend processing service is integrated and validated. Status is shown per tool.

Open toolSome scholarly tasks depend on complete software environments rather than a small browser application.
Full LaTeX processing requires a large typesetting environment with document classes, fonts, bibliography packages and supporting tools. A complete installation can be several gigabytes, and complete installations may be around 7 GB depending on package selection.
Advanced Word and Office document processing may require a complete office suite rather than browser-only JavaScript. A full office-processing environment can require roughly 1–2 GB or more depending on the installed components.
Advanced PDF diagnostics may rely on mature native utilities such as qpdf, Poppler, Ghostscript and ExifTool. These run at the operating-system level and are not equivalent to lightweight browser scripts.
Rather than asking every researcher to download these environments into a browser, ACSS will run these tasks on our server and return the resulting diagnostics or files. Where server-side file processing is involved, controlled execution lets us apply resource limits, timeouts, isolated job directories and malware checks — a practical safeguard, not a guarantee against every risk.
Each advanced tool will state its processing and file-handling conditions before use.
Word counts, reference diagnostics, citation conversion and file-integrity utilities run directly in your browser with no upload.
